hungerEqual Education will be holding a 24 hr Fast for School Libraries. We call on everyone not to eat anything from 18:00 pm on Thursday 29 July until 18:00 pm on Friday 30 July to show government that our children deserve a quality education which includes libraries with books and a librarian!

A National Policy on School Libraries must be finalised which forces schools in South Africa to build libraries, and provides funding and a timetable in order for this to happen.

Minimum norms and standards for all schools now! Policy must ensure that all current and future schools meet minimum physical norms which must include amongst other things flush toilets, desks and libraries with books and librarians.

WHY LIBRARIES?

Only 8% of schools in South Africa have functional libraries. How can our children do well in school if they have no books? Libraries are very important for getting our children reading and understanding what they read.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

• Eat supper before the Fast together with friends, family or neighbours on 29 July.
• Wear our sticker on 30 July when you wake up to show you are fasting.
• Get at least 4 other people to join the Fast with you & Fast in a group.
• CAPE TOWN: Break the Fast on 18:00 pm 30 July with other people or with EE at 17:30 pm outside the Cape Town International Convention Centre!
